Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly is set to have an in-person hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety following a cross-check delivered to Ottawa Senators forward Ridly Greig. This type of hearing indicates the possibility of a suspension of six or more games.
Two Insiders Blast The DoPS Over The Morgan Rielly Hearing
The decision has sparked widespread debate, with respected NHL insiders weighing in on the matter. Elliotte Friedman expressed surprise at the severity of the potential punishment on the 32 Thoughts podcast.
"I was surprised it was the potential of an in-person, I really was." While he believes Rielly's actions warrant a suspension, he disagrees with the length suggested by an in-person hearing, feeling it's too harsh.
Friedman's argument revolves around the belief that Rielly didn't intentionally target Greig's head and neck area, with the stick altering its course upon contact with Greig's body. He acknowledges differing sensibilities regarding this factor.
Larry Brooks, another NHL insider, was even more critical of the Department of Player Safety's decision.
"This is what Parros and his handlers believe merits an in-person hearing? These guys are hopeless."
Despite being based in Toronto, Friedman's and Brooks's criticisms underscore broader concerns about the consistency and appropriateness of disciplinary measures in the NHL.
