The Vancouver Canucks have traded for defenseman Erik Brannstrom from the Colorado Avalanche as the 2024-25 NHL season begins.
In the trade, Vancouver sent defenseman Tucker Poolman, with 20% of his salary retained, and a 2025 fourth-round pick to Colorado in exchange for Brannstrom.
Brannstrom drafted 15th overall in 2017 by the Vegas Golden Knights signed a one year $900,000 deal with the Avalanche in July. Last season the 25 year old defenseman recorded 20 points in 76 games for the Ottawa Senators. With the Canucks, Brannstrom is expected to serve as a depth player, stepping into the lineup if injuries occur or other players underperform.
Following the trade the Canucks placed Brannstrom on waivers which was announced via social media.
For Colorado, they acquired Poolman, but it is unlikely he'll play this season due to ongoing neurological issues from migraines, which limited him to just 43 games over the last two seasons. Poolman's contract, which expires at the end of this season, was a four-year, $10 million deal signed with Vancouver in 2020.
After the trade and placing players on waivers, the Canucks now have $1.19 million in projected cap space with 23 active contracts.
