Dubas has a history of bringing in players he's familiar with from his previous roles. When he was with the Leafs, he often signed players from the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL, where he was once the GM. Now, he's continuing this trend in the NHL.
Yesterday, the Penguins announced they signed defenseman Filip Kral, a 24-year-old who was drafted by Dubas and the Leafs in 2018. Kral, a Czech defenseman, spent parts of three seasons with the Leafs and made his NHL debut during the 2022-23 season.
Kral has signed a one-year contract with the Penguins, which runs through the 2024-25 season and has an average annual value of $775,000 at the NHL level.
