After a disappointing 5-1 defeat to the Boston Bruins in Game 1, Auston Matthews spoke candidly with the media, addressing the reasons behind the Toronto Maple Leafs struggles.

Amidst high expectations for the playoffs, the Leafs faced their rivals, the Bruins, with a revamped team known for its grit and physicality. However, the game quickly slipped away from the Leafs' grasp, resulting in a decisive Bruins victory.

Matthews identified penalties as a key issue, acknowledging that providing too many opportunities on the power play to a team like the Bruins would lead to trouble. Despite a decent start and strong 5-on-5 play throughout the game, the Leafs were unable to overcome their penalty woes and ineffective penalty kill.

"I mean, I can think of a couple things. Obviously, too many penalties. I think. you give a team like that many opportunities on the man advantage, they're going to capitalize. And, you know, I thought started out pretty good game, and then, you know, just little mistakes. They're a very patient team and they executed on the mistakes that we made. It's a game of inches.
