Akim Aliu, the former NHL player known for advocating against racism and addressing coaching behavior in hockey, is on the brink of making a return to the National Hockey League.
Originally a second-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2007, Aliu has appeared in seven NHL games with the Calgary Flames. He's known for his versatility, capable of playing as both a winger and a defenseman, and has played in various leagues since.
Aliu made headlines in 2019 when Bill Peters resigned as head coach of the Calgary Flames following allegations of racially charged language directed at Aliu during their time together with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs. Aliu claimed Peters used derogatory language because he disapproved of Aliu's music choices.
Following the incident, Aliu met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and other league officials to discuss racism in hockey. Despite the challenges, Aliu's ambition to return to the NHL has remained steadfast, and now he has an opportunity with the Barracuda in San Jose.
