NHL owners to receive massive payday following the Coyotes relocation

A significant payday is on the horizon for NHL owners following the recent news of the Arizona Coyotes relocation.

Today's NHL news brought two winners and one potential loser. The clear winners are the city of Salt Lake and NHL owners Bill Daly and Gary Bettman, who could see a significant windfall if the Arizona Coyotes relocate.

"Can confirm the NHL sent a sent a status report memo to the Board of Governors today in response to the media speculation that is occurring around the Coyotes and a potential move to Salt Lake City.

A couple of sources who read the memo said there's still nothing done, still moving parts to the whole situation. But obviously everyone is on notice at least to the possibility of re-location for the Coyotes."

Arizona's time seems to be up, with relocation becoming increasingly likely, and Salt Lake emerging as a top contender. If the move happens, Bettman and company could reap substantial rewards.

"The league source said that after purchasing the team, the NHL would then sell the Coyotes to Smith at a price that could be as high as $1.3 billion -- much higher than the $650 million expansion fee that the Seattle Kraken's owners paid in 2021 to join the league. The source said the NHL's other 31 owners would split $300 million as part of the sale.

The NHL recently sent a status report memo to the Board of Governors regarding the Coyotes' potential move. While nothing is finalized, the memo indicates that relocation is being considered seriously.

Bettman, Daly, and NHL fans alike may have reason to celebrate, as this could also lead to a boost in the NHL Salary Cap.
