Canucks' Affiliate Team Signs First Female Player

The Kalamazoo Wings, a team in the ECHL, announced their newest addition, goalie Mariah Fujimagari, on a Professional Tryout Contract. The 29-year-old showcased her skills in the previous season with AIK in Sweden's Women's league.

"Player signed to pro tryout by Kalamazoo Wings: G Mariah Fujimagari/@Fujimagoalie (1-11-0 w/ a 4.52 GAA & .877 SV% + a shutout in 14 GP for @AIKishockey [women's team] in the @SDHLse [Sweden] last season). She's played pro for the last six seasons including four in North America."

"Kalamazoo adds strength up front and in the crease with Yeamans and Fujimagari signings. "

Standing at 5'11", Fujimagari might just be the fresh talent the K-Wings need.

As of now, Hunter Vorva is their only signed goaltender, having renewed his contract in August. This move suggests that Fujimagari might be eyed for a backup position. The team's Head Coach, Joel Martin, thinks she can do the job:

«Mariah is an athletic goaltender that battles on every shot and reads the play well,»

Expressing gratitude for the chance to prove herself, Fujimagari said,

"I couldn't be happier to join the K-Wings. I'm going to make sure to set the tone from the start with a solid performance every day. I'm most excited to be a part of the Kalamazoo community and skate in front of the amazing fans."

Fujimagari: Another Woman in the ECHL

Setting a precedent in Men's Professional Hockey, the ECHL has been a beacon for Diversity and Inclusion in Women's Hockey.

Since 2020, female players have graced the ECHL's All-Star Game. Legends like Manon Rhéaume and Erin Whitten have their roots in the ECHL. Notably, Hayley Wickenheiser and Marie-Philip Poulin had opportunities to join, but chose not to.

In 2006 , Molly McMaster, a Stage II Colorectal Cancer survivor, played with the K-Wings to promote awareness. At that time, Kalamazoo was a member of the UHL, where McMaster represented all 14 teams.

We wish her the best going forward!
