In the sport of hockey, physical altercations have always been a source of excitement for fans. While fighting was once a common occurrence in the game, it has become increasingly rare in recent years. However, despite this decline, there is still a certain thrill that comes with witnessing a good old-fashioned hockey brawl.
Sadly, the same cannot be said for bench-clearing brawls, which have become almost non-existent in modern hockey. That's why it was such a surprise when both teams in a recent Division 3 Women's World Championship game decided to throw down and clear their benches for a fight.
19 players were given 25 minute penalties while Romania also was assessed a 20 minute penalty for abuse of officials. Of course with the tournament being over it means nothing, but we'll see if the IIHF assesses suspensions for further tournaments.
