Maple Leafs facing backlash for the Matt Murray LTIR treatment

Today an NHL insider announced that Matt Murray would be heading to the AHL for a week-long rehab stint. This means Matt Murray is close to an NHL return after being on Long-Term Injured Reserve (LTIR). This has caused major controversy amongst fans.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are on the verge of beginning their Stanley Cup playoff run. Today it was announced that their veteran goalie Matt Murray would be returning to the ice in a rehab stint with the Toronto Marlies in the AHL.

Matt Murray, BTW, is expected to start for the AHL Marlies in Syracuse this evening. An LTIR conditioning stint lasts up to six days and three games. Clock started today.

Six days would land Matt Murray back with the Toronto Maple Leafs on the last day of the NHL regular season. This has caused a frenzy of complaints from fans around the NHL.

Everyone talking about Vegas Golden Knights and Mark Stone

Meanwhile Toronto over here quietly

While some fans are irate that this is allowed by the NHL others understand that the Toronto Maple Leafs are not the biggest problem when it comes to this issue. One fan made sure to point out the difference in importance between Mark Stone and Matt Murray to their respective teams.

Glorified 3rd string «Matt Murray» returning from LTIR vs Selke caliber superstar Mark Stone returning from LTIR at the same time for the 3rd season in a row

While nothing will be resolved for this season all of the fan complaints about the LTIR system could lead to change soon. If a team that significantly used LTIR wins the Stanley Cup once again look for rule changes to be a topic of discussion.
