The New York Rangers and Washington Capitals kicked off their round one matchup today. Things got heated throughout the game, especially at the end of the 2nd period, when Trevor Van Riemsdyk tried taking on the entire Rangers team alone.
The Scrum came at the last possible moment. Both teams had already left their benches as they were exiting the ice. While the Capitals were leaving though, Van Riemsdyk stayed behind, engaging with some Rangers players, presumably chirping them. Things then escalated as the referees stepped in. At this point, many of the Capitals players had already left the ice, but they quickly turned around to get involved in the action when they realized what was going on.
One fan pointed out that the scrum should have resulted in match penalties for multiple players, including Van Riemsdyk. regardless though, it likely won't matter with the Rangers up 3-1 half way through the 3rd period.
The Rangers were the better team by far in the regular season, having won the President's trophy while the Capitals were the worst team to get in. As such, the result of this series isn't really in question, regardless of shenanigans like this.
